Presley Loves to Sing

Presley loves to sing. She sings everything and anything........usually wrong. Every morning I wake up to her singing on the monitor. Yesterday it was Jesus Love Me. Today it was a made up song that made absolutely no sense, but it made me laugh.
Every Tuesday evening Joey takes Presley to swim lessons. It is pretty much the only time when I am not with them both and so there is little monitoring of what goes on. hahaha. Needless to say, she comes home singing songs like "Tonight, Tonight." Oh the joys of being married. ;0) Here's a little video of Miss Presley girl singing the ABC's. Her tone of voice in this video cracks me up because she has absolutely no inflection, at all....lol.

Blessings

As another loss affects our family, I have been heavy hearted this week. As I sat down this morning to have some much needed quiet time with God I heard a song come over the radio that brought tears to my eyes. It is a song that I had never heard, but the words spoke. It is the song, "Blessings" by Laura Story.
Moments before the song came on I was grieving for, well, pretty much every person in our family that has lost someone this year....and believe me, there has been an enormous amount of loss consuming my family and Joey's family. I was writing down in my journal about my bafflement on the amount of loss there has been, and how this came on the heals of being consumed with blessing after blessing the year before. I read through my blog book from 2009-2010 and was just overwhelmed with the joy our families felt by all of the MANY blessings that God had bestowed on our family that year.

While I was thanking God for that year of blessings, it happened....

that sinking feeling

the overwhelming sense of loss that we have felt this year as a family.
Anger began to fill my soul
the what ifs, the whys, the doubts I've thought but never admitted began to surface.

As I sat for a moment I decided to turn on the radio.....one song was ending and another quickly started. I had never heard the song before, but it captivated me.

What if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears?
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You are near?
What if trials of this life
Are Your mercies in disguise?
What if my greatest disappointments
Or the aching of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst
This world can't satisfy?
And what if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are Your mercies in disguise?
.....And all the while You hear each desperate plea
And long that we'd have faith to believe.

What an awesome God we have that He would have a song reach out and touch me in a moment of time where I was just thinking on the blessings of last year compared to the overwhelming amount of loss we felt from this year......

What if God's blessings come through raindrops? What if the rain, the storms, the hardest nights are God's mercies in disguise?
And all the while He hears and longs that WE WOULD JUST HAVE FAITH TO BELIEVE.

Update on Presley's Potty Training

The other day I was asked, "do you wish you would have waited longer to potty train Presley?" If you would have asked me that question a few weeks after potty training her I would have said, "yes, wait!" However, if you were to ask me that question today I would say, "no, do it as soon as you think they are ready!"
My reasoning behind saying, "wait to potty train" had nothing to do with Presley....it had everything to do with the inconvenience of it. Let's face it, it's a lot easier to just put your child in a diaper and go! For the first 2 months, Presley was only able to "hold it" for about 2 hours so I had to plan our errands around her potty schedule. Today, she is able to "hold it" for up to 4 to 5 hours (a plus in having a little girl).....not that that is healthy, but at least I don't have to rush to a restroom within a few minutes of her telling me, "I need to go potty."
The other reason I thought I should have waited was because I was so stressed out about her having an accident in public. We didn't use pull-ups and so I was always worried about accidents. We attended family church almost all summer because I didn't want to put Presley in the nursery. However, I soon realized that I had nothing to worry about! She does great at church and she does great at pre-school.
Let me just note here.....if you have a sister who tells you that no one will help your child pull up thier pants once they go to preschool, DO NOT believe her! lol....just kidding Sara. ;o) love you!
It is true, for most preschools, that by the time a child enters the 3's program your child is required to be potty trained. Meaning, they have to be self sufficient.....able to get on and off the potty, pull up/down their pants, wipe themselves, wash their hands, etc.
Presley is tiny and still needs help getting on the potty and pulling up her pants. She is in the younger 2's class at her school and is the only one who is potty trained so her PT gets a lot of 1-on-1 attention. ;o) She is now sitting on the potty at school and getting comfortable with doing things on her own.
If I could do things differently what would it be? I would buy the potty seat....the next step potty seat.
Presley loves stability, routine, and consistency. She does not like change...of any kind. She has grown very attached to her Elmo potty seat and refuses to use the bathroom without it. She used to be fine with going potty in a public restroom. However, one day while using the restroom at Walmart the automatic flush went off right as she was getting off the potty and it scared her half to death. So, now she refuses to sit on any potty that does not have the Elmo potty seat on top of it. It is a pain lugging that seat around in a seperate bag. (now, it is true that church nursery, daycare, and preschool workers will not let your child use a special potty seat....which I agree with)
What's my best advice when potty training? Go on a Family Vacation ;o)
When we went on vacation to Ruidoso at the end of July, Presley was completely potty trained by the time we returned home. ;o) I was so nervous about traveling in the car with Presley. In fact, I was so nervous that I almost made the decision to go back to diapers for the week......would have been the worst mistake had I done that. Presley did great! We stopped every 2 hours to go potty and every time we stopped she would go. ;o) We were forced to deal with our fears and timidity of being mobile with a potty training child. Presley became more confident of her abilities druing our trip and she also began to tell us consistently when she needed to go potty.
My other adivice? Do not tell anyone when you are potty training.
Ask for advice, read up on the different ideas on potty training, and then pick what's best for your child. I didn't tell anyone that Presley was potty training until she was potty trained. I did not announce it on fb or put a sign outside our house. lol. I blogged about it and fb it after the fact. It was very helpful to me to hear of the many suggestions and the many things that didn't work for others. I always thought it was great to hear of the many potty training tips out there because you always have the choice to "use it or lose it" (a popular phrase in the world of teaching).
Which two people gave me the best tips? Sara, my little sister. The book, "Potty Wise"
I followed Sara's advice and never used a pull-up. Presley knows that when she puts her underware on she has to stay dry. I don't even use a pull-up at night.....I still use diapers at night and during naps.
I didn't really follow much of what "Potty Wise" said because it just wasn't the right fit for Presley, but I did follow their advice on using consistent bathroom terminology. I started off by never asking her if she needed to go potty.....she didn't understand what I was asking her so she would always say no. Potty Wise suggests that you reward for dryness and potty success. I would ask Presley if she was dry and she would, of course, always say no because she didn't understand what I was asking her. However, after just a few accidents (and having her "feel" dry underware vs. wet underware) she caught on real quick. Once she understood "are you dry" then I moved onto "do you need to go potty?" Today, she tells me (most of the time) when she needs to go. When I drop her off at childcare I always telll her to "stay dry." The teachers also use this terminology with her and they say it works really well with her.
Always Remember.....
Everyone will judge your timing. I was around a group of moms the other day who asked if I had started the dreaded potty training yet. I told them, "yes, she was potty trained" and then they all proceeded to go on and on about how "I was the natorious first time mom who has their child potty trained by the time they're 2 and that once I have a second child I'll enjoy the ease of diapers and wont have them potty trained until they are 4......insert lots of laughter here." No matter when you potty train your child you will always hear, "you started too young, you pushed him/her too much, you started too late, etc." What might be too soon/too old for one child might not be for another. As a teacher, I never asked when a child was potty trained. lol. It never had anything to do with anything. I started Presley because I saw that she was interested in it, that she hated being dirty, would pull on her diaper when it was wet, and would awaken from a nap after pottying in her diaper. Yes, I put her on the potty at 18 months old to get her used to the idea and there were times that she would potty in it occasionally, but at no time did I have any expectation of her being potty trained. The other day I read somewhere that a pediatician said, "after 40 years in my practice I've come to realize that when a toddler starts organizing things it's time to potty train." I thought it was quite interesting because Presley started organizing things right around the time she stated potty training.

Blessed 2 Bless Bags

You know giving money to the homeless is not always the best thing, but you can see that they have some needs. Why not keep a few blessing bags in your car to hand out to those in need.

About 6 months ago we were at a neighborhood Walmart Market. Sitting outside the store was a woman and a young child....probably about 18 months or so. She was sitting on the ground looking rather tired and hungry. People were just passing by her without a second look. I couldn't believe that no one was helping her. I stopped and bent down and asked her if she needed anything. She couldn't speak much English, but she was able to tell me that her baby needed baby food and milk. I felt horrible for her because she just kept repeating herself over and over again. So, while Joey and Presley waited in the car I ran into Walmart to buy her food. I felt so bad for her son and I thought to myself, "I can definitely do more than just buy her baby food and milk!" It's amazing how much food you can get for $30. Sadly, as I returned to give her the bags of food she had already left. I ended up taking the food with me to the food pantry at our local CCA where our Bible Study was serving the elderly in need the very next day. After this experience, I have often thought to myself, "I should have been more prepared, maybe they wouldn't have left."

Yesterday I mentioned the Blessed to Bless bags some of my friends from Bible Study and I got together to do while Presley was in pre-school the other day. So many people are doing this activity. Once it was brought up at Bible Study we decided we should all just get together to do it. Most of us learned about this idea on pinterest. When you click on the pin it immediately leads you to the woman behind the idea ;o) Julie's blog, "Joy's Hope." We followed Julie's routine and used most of her ideas on what to put into the bags.......click here to read her post. We came up with a verse and then I made some "Blessed to Bless" tags for the bags we put together. Click here to download the tags.

Here's a list of what we put in our bags.......
1 gallon Ziploc bag
toothbrush and toothpaste
brush (walmart has travel sized for $1)
deodorant
Tic Tacs
Trial size Ibuprofen/Acetaminophen
hand sanitizer
sunblock
body wash and shampoo
rinse free shampoo
Cheese and crackers
peanut butter and crackers
nutrigrain bar
Grammy Sammy (sandwich snacks found at Babies' R Us)
fruit cup
Plastic utensils and napkin
bible tract (I used Daily Bread)
McDonald's gift card
Pair of men's socks

It's All Very Pinteresting ;o)

I know I've talked about Pinterest before and even though it is somewhat addictive I still think it is a great tool. I love it because you can share boards with others. I have a lot of friends who are homeschooling k-1 right now. I often get lots of questions about activities I used to do with my first graders and sometimes it's hard to "share those activities" with just words. Pinterest allows for me to share first grade activities we used to do in the classroom with those moms who have asked me for ideas.

The other thing I like about Pinterest is that it acts as a wealth of information! Joey and I are usually pretty organized, but sometimes it's hard to put things in perspective. Pinterest has great organizational ideas.....many of them being things you could use around the house to help manage your organization. I actually have a pin board called, "why didn't I think of that!" Right before we put our house on the market I set aside a week of organizing. My plan was to do an organization activity called, "30 bags in 30 days." While I started off with a similar plan in mind it quickly turned to "40 bags in 7 days." I organized every small space known to mankind in our house and then moved on to the larger spaces. I got rid of everything that had not been used within the past year. It felt great to get rid of all the "stuff" that had just been sitting around waiting to be used! I threw more than half of the "stuff" away while giving the other fourth to goodwill. One of the great things about all of this organizing was that it got our house ready to show and sell! Joey had already organized our garage, master closet, and attic back in Spring so I really only had to worry about the inside of the house....which was nice. ;o) I organized everything with a quick move in mind so our whole attic is filled with plastic boxes. That way, they can be easily moved from one actic to the next. Here is a picture of the hall closet I organized. It's not as cute as the ones I pinned, but it gets the job done. ;o) I wont bore you with my 20 organized pictures, but I am quite proud of these two closets as they were the very worst!!!!

This is the guest closet...I am too embarrassed to show the before pictures...on any of them! lol. I grabbed a closet organizer in the dollar spot at Target a few weeks ago and I use it to put all of my craft stuff in it and all of Prelsey's tot school activities in........another idea that came from pinterest.

Tomorrow I will post about the Blessed to Bless bags some of my friends from Bible Study and I got together to do while Presley was in pre-school the other day. This fabulous idea is all over pinterest right now. So many people are doing it and once we brought it up at Bible Study we decided we should all just get together to do it. You can click here if you are wondering what it is. ;o) We came up with a verse and then I made some "Blessed to Bless" tags for the bags we put together. I will try to post them on here tomorrow.

Sweet P goes to Preschool ;o)

Today was Presley's first day of Pre-school ;o) and she did really well....no tears, no crying, and no accidents! Wahoo! I am so proud of this little girl. ;o) For about the past week she has really come out of her shell. Her separation anxiety has stopped about as quick as it started.....and how thankful I am because it's been a long time coming.
Don't get me wrong, she still likes her space. She doesn't like to be hugged on or held unless she is in the mood to be...she is this way even with me and Joey. She likes to feel in control of things and invading her space is somewhat intimidating to her.
She got embarrassed after I started laughing at her because of the way she was smiling

After her day at school today she got in the car and started telling me ALL about it. Although, I had no idea what she was talking about. ;o) It is very hard to be on the "other side" of this school thing. I much prefer being on the "teacher" side of things. I can't imagine not ever going back to teaching and I don't like being "out of the loop" on what's going on in the world of education. I have been trying to keep up with all of the current curriculum and I've been reading up on all of the new stuff that is going on.
As a teacher you are required by the state of Texas to accumulate 100 hours of staff development every 5 years in order to renew your teaching certificate....not a big deal when you are actually teaching. HOWEVER, it is very hard to do when you are taking time off from teaching! Staff development (GOOD staff development, that is) is extremely expensive and so it's hard to get those required 100 hours in if you are not currently teaching. I have tried to get involved on-line as much as possible because a portion of your hours can come from book studies and independent studies. I have picked up a few books that I have been eager to read, The Daily Five, The Book Whisperer, and Debbie Diller's Math Workstations....hopefully this will help me stay somewhat current.
It is so funny being on the other side of things now that I am a mom. I totally "get it" now and would probably sympathize a little more with "those parents" who used to drive me crazy...but who I always loved and adored. ;o) lol. Knowledge is wealth, and so I am very thankful that I have been on the inside of things in regards to the Texas public school system. One of the reasons I quit teaching a year early was because of all the politics behind the scene......but that's another blog. ;o)The one thing I do know is that it's usually all about the teacher and I feel like Presley got the best teacher in the world. ;o) She is very sweet and calming.....just what Presley needs. Here's a funny thing....Presley is surrounded by boys all of the time. All of her cousins are boys and most of my Dallas friends ALL have boys. The only little girls she ever plays with are in San Antonio where all of my friends have little girls! Thankfully, our Hometeam has quite a few girl/boy households. ;o) lol. Presley has 8 kids in her pre-school class and all of them are girls except for 2 little boys. Love it! It is crazy how things like that happen. My last year of teaching I had 22 students.....15 boys and 7 girls. I am still convinced that that was the real reason I quit. ha! Just Kidding, it was actually the best and most well behaved class I had ever had. ;o)
Along with the 2 days a week of pre-school, Presley will also be attending Moppets every other Wednesday, Kindermusik with me on Fridays, Excite gymnastics with me on Mondays, and swimming lessons with dad on Tuesday evenings. It kind of sounds like a lot when I write it down on paper, but she enjoys her music and gymnastic time with me so much. I have also begun to work with Presley at home. I love being able to pull activities out of my teaching boxes and pinterest boards (google it if you don't know what it is....you must join) to do with Presley during the week. She absolutely loves to learn. I am actually very surprised that she loves learning so much. I never thought she really would. She's very independent and likes to do things on her own time. Joey gets upset with me sometimes because I tend to make assumptions and observe Presley with a teaching mind rather than a parent mind.....all of you parents who were once teachers know exactly what I'm talking about. lol. Anyhow, I was quite surprised when I pulled out my apple bucket because she just went nuts! We observed apples and went over the different colors, we cut an apple open and counted the seeds, we did apple paintings, colored an apple page, and created an animal craft out of the letter A. She sat there for a good hour completely enthralled....I was quite impressed. We'll see if this love for learning continues on into her school years. BUT I am keeping my fingers crossed it will ;o)

Hindsight's always 20/20

A few weeks ago, Bethany Hamilton (the girl from Soul Surfer) spoke at our church. She is only 21, but what an amazing young woman. She seemed very young, yet so mature in her relationship with God. She said something during her conversation with my pastor that has really stuck with me the past few weeks. She said, "fear is a gnarly thing, it can take you captive and keep you from achieving your goals." I love that she used the word "gnarly" because it just shows her authenticity, and I love that she said this because there is so much truth behind it. I can recall on several occasions throughout my life when I have made decisions based on fear....fear of the unknown or the what ifs. Thankfully, I am also reminded of several decisions (good decisions) I have made in my life because of the fear I have overcome.

I have been reading Angie Smith's book, "What Women Fear: Walking in Faith that Transforms" and have yet to put it down. It's a book that I think every woman should read because I think we all deal with fear in some form or another every day.

As I am getting ready to meet with my doctors in a few weeks I am feeling very fearful of the unknown. The funny thing is is that a few weeks ago I was pretty much certain that Joey and I would try for a second child. I had complete peace about it and didn't give it a second thought. However, after meeting with my retinal specialist I have felt little seeds of doubt enter my mind. I love what I read today in Angie's book and I can so relate to this....

"I am someone who lives in a constant state of worry about the future, and it's something I have to commit to the Lord many times a day. I fear that He has somehow forgotten me and that I'm on my own. I take matters into my own hands but He reminds me that He hasn't gone anywhere. There is always a moment in time when I can feel His gentle voice reassuring me, but it's usually hindsight that brings relief instead of trust in the moment. I long to be a woman who walks into the moment God has given me, with full confidence in what's to come. I know it isn't always going to look the way I want it to, but I long to internalize the fact that He is never going to forsake me or take his hands off me." -Angie Smith

Hindsight is always 20/20 and I always think to myself...."why did I worry about that? or "had I just known now what I didn't know then." I am sure I could go on and on about all of the "hindsights" in my life, but the truth is what Angie said, "it's usually hindsight that brings relief instead of trust in the moment." My current circumstances will definitely be one where I will have to walk completely by faith, step out in hope, and walk in the moment with my eyes on the One I trust.

"We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." 2 Cor. 10:5
